How to Choose a No-Fee Cash Back Card

Match the card to your biggest spend category

Cash back rewards are most valuable when concentrated in your highest-spend category. If groceries dominate your budget, a 6% grocery card beats a 1.5% flat card by more than $200 per year on just $250 per month of grocery spend. Look at your last three months of statements to find your top category.

Check for spending caps

High-rate no-fee cards often cap bonus categories. A 6% grocery card may cap at $6,000 per year in grocery spend, after which the rate drops to 1%. If you spend $800 per month on groceries, you will hit that cap in less than 8 months. After the cap, a flat-rate card may earn more on the remainder of the year.

Do not overlook the sign-up bonus

A $200 sign-up bonus on a no-fee card is equivalent to receiving 13 months of rewards for free. Prioritise the sign-up bonus when choosing between two cards with similar long-term rates, especially if your spending level means you will meet the minimum spend requirement within the first month or two.

Factor in redemption flexibility

Cash back is the most flexible reward type because it can be redeemed as a statement credit, direct deposit, or check. Points and miles require more effort to redeem well. For simplicity, a cash back card with no minimum redemption threshold and automatic quarterly payouts is the easiest to manage.
